Facebook sees future in augmenting our reality

Or use your smartphone's camera to spruce up your dinky apartment, at least virtually.

Facebook's next big bet is on an emerging field of technology known as augmented reality.

What is meant by augmented reality (AR), and what is it good for?

Zuckerbeg, 32, said we focus on a lot of things like Facebook Lite. Instead, he believes the cameras on existing smartphones will lead the adoption of augmented reality.

According to Michael Abrash, chief scientist at Facebook-owned Oculus Research, super augmented reality (AR) glasses could replace smartphones as the everyday computing gadget in the next five years.

With the camera front and center across all apps, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is now turning the camera into an augmented reality (AR) platform. The company also showed off its first social virtual reality app on Tuesday.

Now, Facebook is pushing AR as a way for developers to build more compelling Facebook-powered apps for mobile phones. Advances - many of them dramatic - need to be made in optics, audio, interaction, computer vision, AI, system design and the user experience before things will come close to fruition.

As of December, Facebook had 1.74 billion monthly active users on mobile alone.

Senate, House Republicans reach agreement on long-term road funding plan
Indiana's smaller communities and 64 smallest counties would see a 75-25 split with the state providing the larger percentage. The proposal includes tolling, but the governor must produce studies by next year.

"Even if we were a little slow to add cameras to our apps, I'm confident that we're going to be the ones to push this augmented reality platform forward", Zuckerberg said.

The event is an opportunity for the social media giant to lay out some of its plans and ideas for the near and more distant future - ranging from virtual reality to chat bots and new camera filters.

Snap representatives did not immediately respond to an email for comment on Tuesday afternoon.

Rachel Rubin Franklin, the former head of the Sims video game franchise, said it lets you spend time with people and gives "the essence that you're really there together".

Facebook does innovation to serve "everyone" in the community and not just the "high end", its CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said in an apparent swipe at Snapchat boss' reported "poor countries" remark that triggered a controversy in India.

The updated messaging platform, Messenger 2.0, was presented at F8 by David Marcus, Facebook's vice president of messaging products. A new machine-learning service will help small business users automate replies to queries based on data on their websites. That would, for instance, allow groups of friends to share Spotify playlists or to make a restaurant reservation through OpenTable that keeps everyone on the same page.

Further the Facebook founder also briefly addressed a tragedy that took place Monday, when a man posted video of a murder on Facebook. That raised questions about Facebook's ability to monitor gruesome material on its site. Longer term, both companies appear to be working on AR glasses as the delivery mechanism for an AR platform.
