French authorities detain 3 people at gunman's home in Paris suburb

A gunman shot and killed a policeman and wounded two others on the world-famous Champs Elysees avenue in Paris on Thursday night, an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

Meanwhile, two French officials say the gunman was detained in February for threatening police, then freed.

Police shot and killed the gunman after he opened fire on a police van on Paris' most famous boulevard.

The attacker, identified as French national Karim Cheurfi, was later killed by police during the Thursday night shootout, the Guardian reported. Belgian security officials had warned French counterparts before the attack that El Osri was a "very unsafe individual en route to France" aboard the Thalys high-speed train.

The shooting comes just two days after police arrested two men in southern Marseille with weapons and explosives who were suspected of preparing an attack to disrupt the first-round of the presidential election on Sunday.

Speaking during a televised debate around the time of Thursday's attack, Fillon said there was "no room for pursuing today or tomorrow an electoral campaign because first of all we have to demonstrate our solidarity with the police officers".

People on the French security services' watch list for radicalization should also be expelled from France and have their French citizenship revoked, she said.

"This kind of terrorism is an attack on the entire civilized world, and we resolutely condemn it", Abe said in the message, released by the Foreign Ministry.

Police tape surrounded the quiet, middle-class area and neighbours expressed surprise at the searches.

It marked the first direct US military action against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime since the country's civil war began. The U.S. responded with force to the chemical weapons attack that killed scores of victims in the Syrian town of Khan Shaykhun.

Police later carried out a raid on what is thought to be Cheurfi's home and, according to intelligence sources, found guns and ammunition.

A second suspect has turned himself in to the Belgian police, AFP reports.

In addition to the assault rifle used in the attack, he had a pump-action shotgun and knives in his vehicle, the sources said. The three main candidates - far-right candidate Marine le Pen, independent centrist Emmanuel Macron and former conservative Prime Minister Francois Fillon - cancelled planned campaign events following the shooting.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the Champs Elysees shooting hours after the attack, in a statement identifying the attacker as "Abu Yousif the Belgian".

The officials had no other details about the attacker.

French President Francois Hollande said he is convinced the "cowardly killing" was an act of terrorism.

"Nothing must hamper this democratic moment, essential for our country", Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said after a top-level meeting on Friday that reviewed the government's already heightened security plans for the two-round vote that begins on Sunday.

At about 9 pm the man drove a auto up to a parked police van full of officers.
