United Airlines Won't Be Firing Anyone Over Dr. David Dao's Assault

United Airlines Won't Be Firing Anyone Over Dr. David Dao's Assault

CEO Oscar Munoz said he takes full responsibility "for making this right", and promised more details later this month after United finishes a review of its policies on overbooked flights.

Munoz and other executives vowed to treat customers with dignity, and said that what happened to Dao will never happen again.

United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said in a statement that the airline looked "forward to meeting with the committee and sharing with them the comprehensive review and the customer-focused actions we will communicate next week", Reuters reported.

Dr Dao's attorney said last week it was likely he would sue over the incident, in which Dao lost two front teeth, broke his nose and suffered a concussion.

"I'm sure there was a lot of conjecture about me personally", Munoz said when asked if any executives had left the company.

For the first quarter, United recorded net income of $96 million, down from $313 million a year ago. The 69-year-old Asian-American physician was violently removed from an overbooked United Airlines flight by security officers to make room for crew members at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago after refusing to give up his seat as requested.

The scandal prompted millions of people to take to the street for weeks, calling for the ousting of the president. Lee, the de facto chief of Samsung, is already on trial along with four other executives from the company.

United is facing calls for a boycott after the shocking incident.

United has announced that it will no longer call on law enforcement to remove passengers from flights unless there are safety concerns.

"Whether it is overbooked planes, delayed flights or sky-high fees, the laws we have now in place to protect consumers have been frequently and flagrantly ignored by airlines more concerned with profits than passengers", said Blumenthal.

United President Scott Kirby said that "it's really too early for us to tell anything about bookings", while noting that the company's April-June financial forecast had not changed.

"United Airlines is a private, for-profit company relying on publicly financed infrastructure - and now, apparently, a public police force - to punish passengers", Blumenthal wrote.

"Many of us who fly frequently have experienced overbooking situations", Lipinski said, "but obviously how it was handled in this circumstance was unacceptable, and no passenger should ever be put through what this individual was".
