The twisters were among up to 29 that were reportedly spawned by powerful storms that raced through a swath of the central USA stretching from Texas to the Great Lakes on Tuesday evening, destroying dozens of homes, killing two people and injuring dozens of others. A spokesman for the National Weather Service confirmed that it was a tornado, but the agency was still trying to determine the twister's strength.

State emergency officials are juggling multiple responsibilities, severe weather damage in Barron County and more severe storms moving into Southern Wisconsin Wednesday night.

Sam Porter, director of Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief, and Anthony Jordan, BGCO executive director-treasurer, met Gov. Mary Fallin, Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John Doak and others in Elk City, surveying tornado damage and connecting with people in the community. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene, and to a golf course where a gas leak was reported.

In Taylor County, several power power poles and lines were down in the Stetsonville area.

Danny Ringer, a chaplain with the Elk City Fire Department, said 53-year-old Bo Mikles was killed when he attempted to flee the storm in his vehicle, which was picked up and thrown several hundred feet.

The weather service says the twister packed winds of 120 to 130 miles per hour, or even slightly stronger, when it hit the park near Chetek on Tuesday evening. According to the sheriff, 17 people were transported to the hospital and 5 to 10 others had minor injuries.
