Disgraced US Rep. Anthony Weiner to face criminal charges in sexting case

The Democrat will appear in court at 11 a.m., the USA attorney's office in Manhattan said.

Bloomberg News reported Weiner's plea agreement called for a sentence between 21 and 27 months.

The charge stems from the sexually charged text messages and Skype conversations Weiner exchanged with a 15-year-old girl last year.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the criminal charges had yet to be filed publicly with the court.

Former U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner was expected to plead guilty in federal court in NY on Friday, months after U.S. prosecutors opened an investigation into his alleged "sexting" with a 15-year-old North Carolina girl that eventually played a role in the U.S. presidential election. Federal sex offenders can't be alone with children, and if Weiner and Abedin do finally get divorced, Weiner cannot seek custody of his son.

The FBI began investigating Weiner in September after the 15-year-old North Carolina girl told a tabloid news site, the Daily Mail, that she and the disgraced former politician had exchanged lewd messages for several months.

The scandal rocked the American political landscape, when a federal investigation of Weiner's computer allegedly revealed emails forwarded by his wife, Huma Abedin, who was working for Hillary Clinton.

In October, just days before the election, FBI director James Comey announced the bureau was reopening its closed investigation into whether ex-Secretary of State Clinton had used a private email server for classified documents in order to assess the newly-discovered correspondence. "Based on our review, we have not changed our conclusions" not to recommend criminal charges against Clinton, Comey wrote. The Comey letters and late-in-the-election investigation have been blamed for Clinton's loss to President Donald Trump, The Los Angeles Times reported.

David Schaefer, a spokesman for the law firm Covington & Burling, whose attorney, Arlo Devlin-Brown, is representing Weiner, said the former congressman's lawyer will comment later Friday.
