Fiat Chrysler seeks diesel emission certification from EPA

Fiat Chrysler, keen to put to rest any allegations of diesel-emissions cheating, will be updating diesel vehicles old and new.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA), attempting to reach a settlement with United States regulators following studies that show the automaker installed emissions-cheating software, has said that it will modify around 100,000 diesel vehicles.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles intends to install modified emissions software in diesel variants of the 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2014-2016 Ram 1500, according to a company statement.

The latest move comes after a Reuters report on Wednesday claimed the Justice Department plans to sue FCA by May 24 if discussions over its alleged emissions violations don't produce a resolution. But FCA says any litigation would be "counterproductive" to its talks with the EPA.

"FCA US believes this will address the agencies' concerns regarding the emissions software calibrations in those vehicles", the automaker said in a statement and added that the fix likely would not compromise performance or fuel economy.

FCA shares fell 1 percent to $10.44 in midday trading. The automaker has been unable to sell the vehicles at least since January, when EPA announced the violations.

The filing is the culmination of four months of work with the EPA and CARB after the federal regulator alleged the Italian-American automaker had installed software in 2014 to 2016 model-year editions of the diesel vehicles that violated clean-air rules.

FCA's diesels have also been the subject of attention in Europe. It said it was also seeking regulatory approval for 2017 models with the same software.

Earlier in the month, FCA filed a motion to dismiss the emissions lawsuit that claims Dodge Ram trucks emit illegal levels of nitrogen oxides; FCA allegedly covered this up with the use of "defeat devices" during emissions testing. On Wednesday, the European Union's executive arm filed a formal complaint against the Italian government for allowing Fiat Chrysler to sell cars created to evade emissions tests.

Officials from the EPA declined to comment on the story.

The emission-cheating scheme has cost Volkswagen more than $20 billion in fines and settlements, in addition to goodwill among some USA drivers.

The Auburn Hills, Michigan, company said that if its application is approved by the agencies, vehicle owners would be able to get the software updates at their dealerships, but did not give a time frame.

FCA seems to have developed a software fix for the engine that ensures the engine is within emissions compliance 100% of the time.
