Ford updates its 2016 vehicles to support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Ford is updating a large number of 2016 model year cars equipped with SYNC 3 infotainment software, adding Android Auto and CarPlay to the vehicles with a free, over-the-air update via Wi-Fi, or using either USB or going through their dealer.

SYNC 3 now supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on all model-year 2017 Ford cars including the Fiesta, Focus, Fusion and Mustang, SUVs including the Escape, Explorer and Expedition, F-Series trucks and Ford's electrified vehicles.

Ford vehicle owners can download a free, over-the-air update via Wi-Fi, use USB, or visit their dealer.

Now, thanks to a simple USB update (or by visiting a dealership), you can add Android and Apple's in-car functionality, opening the door to a new interface in your auto.

Retroactively offering this kind of thing to auto owners is a definite change in tone for auto makers, since they typically use these kinds of things as incentives to get people interested in vehicle model updates.

This is Ford's first Wi-Fi OTA update.

CarPlay and Android Auto run over the top of the in-car system, providing a familiar layer that gives you access to navigation, messaging, calling and music options from your phone. Apple CarPlay support requires a USB hub upgrade available through Ford dealers.

Ford is offering Android Auto and Apple CarPlay software to many of its customers who missed out on the technology.

If you're feeling "with it" technologically, it's also available via Ford's first-ever Wi-Fi update. As long as the system is connected to the Wi-Fi, the update process will keep running in the background.
