Leader of ISIS in Afghanistan killed in April raid, Pentagon say

The group overran large parts of Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, near the Pakistan border, in 2015 but their part in the Afghan conflict had been largely overshadowed by the operations against the Taliban. USA officials believe Hasib is behind the military hospital attack in March and other high profile attacks, according to a Reuters report. Abdul Hasib's death was confirmed Sunday by U.S. Forces - Afghanistan.

The Pentagon says a military raid last month killed the head of the Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan.

It added that the Isis-K leader "was responsible for ordering the attack on the 400-bed hospital in Kabul, kidnapped girls and beheaded elders in front of their families".

During the operation on April 27, two U.S. Army Rangers were accidentally killed by friendly fire during the more than three-hour fight. The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces are now conducting joint offensive operations to combat terrorism across the country.

Earlier in the month, USA forces targeted an ISIS tunnel complex in the region when it dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb ever used in a strike.

Hasib's regiment is also known as the Islamic State in the Khorasan (ISIS-K), which is a name for both Afghanistan and Pakistan that dates back to ancient times.

Masters champion Sergio Garcia and world number one Dustin Johnson were alongside McIlroy on level par after rounds of 71 and 73 respectively.

The Hamza operations were launched almost one month ago in response to the growing threats posed by ISIS loyalists in Nangarhar province. The report has not been confirmed.

The head of ISIL in Afghanistan - believed to be the mastermind behind several high-profile attacks including an assault on a military hospital that claimed at least 50 lives - has been killed.

According to the U.S. military, "hundreds" of ISIS fighters have been killed or captured since Afghan-U.S. forces launched an offensive against ISIS-K in Nangarhar.

Two US army rangers also died in the raid, near an underground system of tunnels believed to be used by IS which were targeted by the largest conventional bomb ever used by the US.

Hasib, who has led the group since his predecessor Hafiz Khan was killed by a U.S. drone strike a year ago, is believed to have ordered the deadly attack on a Kabul military hospital in March.

Logari had "waged a barbaric campaign of death, torture and violence against the Afghan people, especially those in southern Nangarhar", Nicholson said.
