Trump pressure rises as Russia probes intensify

President Donald Trump denounced the appointment of a special counsel to investigate his campaign's ties with Russia Thursday, repeatedly calling it an unprecedented "witch hunt" that "hurts our country terribly".

In addition, Comey wrote a memo detailing Trump's comments to him in February saying "I hope you can let this go", referring to the Flynn probe, a source who saw the memo said on Tuesday. At the time, Attorney-General Jeff Sessions, who has recused himself from the Russian Federation investigations, was busy interviewing candidates to replace ousted FBI director James Comey.

Senators also told reporters that the deputy attorney general confirmed NBC News' report that the FBI probe is considered a criminal investigation, not a counterintelligence investigation. "So I think the biggest legal change seems to be that Mr. Mueller is going to proceed forward with the idea that this as criminal investigation instead of a counter intelligence investigation".

Krauthammer does believe the appointment of Mueller as special counsel is a short-term political win because it gives him an excuse not to answer questions on the matter.

"Until we have seen the documents, until we have seen some more testimony, I think it is inappropriate to talk about any more conclusions", McCaskill said.

Trump has made similar complaints before, but this one came the day after the Justice Department appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to lead the federal Trump-Russia investigation.

Vermont's two U.S. Senators praised the appointment of a special prosecutor to oversee the FBI investigation into potential collusion between associates of President Donald Trump and the Russian government.

Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the number-two Republican in the Senate and a member of its Intelligence committee, said after the briefing that he told Rosenstein he was anxious about the committees stepping on the FBI's toes. "The acting attorney general has the authority to appoint a special counsel and has done so".

During the press conference, Mr. Trump responded with a direct "no, no" to a question about whether he asked former FBI Director James Comey to shelf an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

"On May 8 he learned that the president was going to terminate Comey", Durbin added.

"The Congressional efforts that Chairman Burr and I are leading, we're going to redouble our efforts because we still have to get our job done as well", said Sen.

On another note, President Trump met with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos at the White House Thursday afternoon.
