Trump says he's 'very close' to naming a new Federal Bureau of Investigation director

Earlier in the day, Trump said that Lieberman was near the top of the list of candidates for the post. Tim Scott, R-S.C. "I do think that the special prosecutor provides a sense of calm and confidence perhaps for the American people, which is incredibly important".

Lieberman traveled to the White House on Wednesday on short notice for an interview and afterward said it was a "good meeting".

Most voters disapprove of Trump sharing intel with Russians: A new Morning Consult/Politico poll found a majority of voters say it was "inappropriate" for Trump to share highly classified information with Russian officials.

Since leaving the Senate, Lieberman has been a senior counsel at the NY law firm Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP and serves on a number of boards. He told The Courant previously that he was earning a living at the law firm so he can be "generous to my children and grandchildren".

Rosen said in an interview that Lieberman "has a lifetime of ethical public service" to his credit.

Trump has said he could name a new director before he leaves the country Friday for the Middle East, on his first overseas trip as president.

After serving the Democratic party for years, Lieberman spoke at the 2008 Republican National Convention - still as an Independent - on behalf of then-presidential candidate John McCain.

Lieberman defeated Republican incumbent Lowell Weicker in 1988 and served as a senator from CT until 2013.

Since leaving the Senate, Lieberman has been a senior counsel at the NY law firm Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP and serves on a number of boards.

Trump came under criticism for firing Comey as he was supervising the investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and any possible links between the Trump and Russian Federation during the campaign. "In many aspects, he's the finest man I've ever known". But the appointment does not assuage all concerns, and an Federal Bureau of Investigation director would still play a major role as things moved forward. Blumenthal declined to comment on Lieberman or any other possible candidates for the job.

For years, Lieberman has crossed the political aisle to form alliances with Republicans. He has served as co-chairman of No Labels, a centrist group that promotes bipartisanship. In addition, the FBI Director is generally appointed for a 10-year term; Lieberman is 75 years old.

That same year, he was one of 17 Democrats who joined Republicans in voting in favor of an amendment of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act giving the US authority to monitor the calls and emails of Americans communicating with people outside of the country without a warrant.
