Uber threatens to fire self-driving auto engineer in trade secrets case

SAN FRANCISCO Uber will appeal a judge's order rejecting its attempt to arbitrate a high profile trade secrets lawsuit against Alphabet's self-driving Waymo unit, according to a court filing on Thursday.

U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco last week issued an injunction ordering Uber to keep Levandowski away from work involving the self-driving vehicle technology at issue in the case, to prevent him and all other employees from using the materials and to return them to Waymo by May 31. Last week, U.S. District Judge William Alsup of San Francisco ordered that the case proceed to trial, and issued an injunction banning Uber engineer Anthony Levandowski from any work involving LiDAR technology.

Uber's letter to Mr. Levandowski was revealed in a motion his attorneys filed with the court late Thursday that asks the judge to revise his ruling that Uber could fire Mr. Levandowski for invoking the Fifth Amendment. Uber did not immediately respond for comment.

Ransomware attack should be wake-up call for governments, says Microsoft
But the post-mortem on how it happened - and how to stop it happening again - has only just begun. It's well known that the NHS and other organisations still have PCs running XP.

"In full view of the court, Waymo has presented strong evidence that Uber has stolen our trade secrets and used our confidential information", a Waymo representative said in a statement. The ride-hailing app is able to continue working on its self-driving vehicle project, however, and the court found that very little of Waymo's intellectual property had found its way into Uber's prototypes.

Levandowski found the Otto self-driving company in 2016, after leaving Waymo; Otto was then acquired by Uber. The ride-hailing app is able to continue working on its self-driving vehicle project, however, and the court found that very little of Waymo's intellectual property had found its way into Uber's prototypes.
