Volvo Cars to stop developing new diesel engines

Volvo Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson said that Volvo will not develop any new diesel engines anymore.

The company will continue building its latest model of diesel engines, first developed in 2013, but Samuelsson said it would be too costly to invest in research for a new motor. This set-up utilizes a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder that powers the front wheels and a powerful electric motor to drive the rear.Volvo aims to release their first all-electric auto by 2019 with a goal of one million EVs sold by 2025.

Samuelsson further added, "We have to recognise that Tesla has managed to offer such a vehicle for which people are lining up".

Samuelsson had earlier said that eventually the higher cost of complying with tighter emissions rules will increase the price of diesel cars to the point where plug-in hybrids will become an attractive alternative.

"We have just launched a brand-new generation of petrol and diesel engines, highlighting our commitment to this technology", Samuelsson told Reuters in a statement.

Soybeans, Grains Higher as More Wet Weather Moves Into Midwest
Planting momentum increased across large parts of the Midwest following improved weather conditions and less torrential rains. More than 80% of the state has adequate soil moisture, and 82% of pastures and rangelands are in good to excellent condition.

The money, machine and manpower saved will be invested in developing electric and hybrid powertrains instead.

Some 90 percent of XC90s sold in Europe are diesels, but that sounds like it's going to change in the future.

The European market is the biggest market in the world for diesel cars, with such vehicles accounting for over 50 percent of all new registrations in the region.

The scandal over Volkwagen's cheating of United States environmental tests to mask emissions of nitrogen oxides, which can cause or aggravate respiratory disease, means manufacturers are facing intense scrutiny over the true level of pollutants being emitted by their cars.
