WannaCry is your fault — Microsoft to NSA

WannaCry is your fault — Microsoft to NSA

Once malicious software is in the wild, it is commonly reused by hacking groups, especially nation-states trying to leave the fingerprints of another country. Several organizations obviously can not afford to lose such data and because the hackers usually detail a small amount of payment to decrypt that data, it is less of a headache to start from scratch so many people will opt to lose a small percentage of their savings to get access to their computer once more.

With ransomware attacks, the malware locks down a target machine, encrypting its data and preventing the owner from accessing it until he or she agrees to pay up.

Who are affected by WannaCry?

Experts cautioned, however, that the criminals who pushed the ransomware to the world might be able to disable the "kill" switch in future versions of their malware. On Monday, the Japanese electronics maker Hitachi, a prominent Korean theater chain and the Chinese government said their systems had been affected.

The United States should take some blame for the WannaCry Ransomware attack, Chinese state media has declared.

And that's just a measure of the electronic consequences of WannaCry.

Some are. The news site Quartz has set up a Twitter bot to track the bitcoin wallets linked to the attack, which are growing fatter by the minute.

Malware attack leveraged NSA tool that leaked online, says Microsoft.

That raises questions about inequality in technology, said Stewart Baker, a former general counsel at the National Security Agency. Those people "are at risk - they're probably not getting updates", he said. It is therefore advisable to always download the newest version of a software as soon as it is available.

But after the highly public spread of WannaCry, companies around the globe no longer have an excuse to forgo system updates, said one former Obama administration official. It involves blocking someone's personal data on a computer and threatening to destroy or expose it if the person does not pay a ransom.

United States to continue with Obama-era Iran nuclear deal, for now
Chinese complaints come despite worldwide recognition of the destabilising effect both Iran and North Korea have. United States officials have declined to give a timeline for when the Iran review would be complete.

John Riggi, former FBI Section Chief for the Cyber Division Outreach Section and now head of services firm BDO's Cybersecurity and Financial Crimes Unit, believes that because the WannaCry ransomware started out in Europe and spread to the rest of the world-including Asia-the sequence of attacks in other countries worked to the advantage of USA organizations.

What if I don't have the luxury of fighting the ransomware? However, sometimes, you can not avoid being infected. We'll get to some tips in a minute.

Microsoft, however, immediately issued a "free" patch for old software, including Windows XP, on Friday midnight when the ransomware attack began spreading.

That's according to a report in the Financial Times that claimed that rather than issue the fix, the Redmond, Wash., software giant charged some users of its old OS as much as $1,000 a year to protect their computers from threats that played out this past weekend with the "WannaCry" ransomware attack.

What about Apple and Android devices?

Spanish firm Telefonica, French automaker Renault, the US -based delivery service FedEx and the German railway Deutsche Bahn were among those affected. "That's going to become a more common practice". Unfortunately, there are many systems that simply are rarely updated, such (believe it or not) many military systems.

Potentially, anyone who is connected to the internet can and will be affected by WannaCry. Experts say this vulnerability has been understood among experts for months, yet too many groups failed to take it seriously.

"Software patch has been installed in systems to counter ransomeware, system up-gradation to be finished by June", Prasad added.

The organisations that are vulnerable to ransomware and phishing attacks include those that imagine they are safe because of the service they provide. "An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the USA military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen". Any user of a recent version of the operating system, such as Windows 7 or 8, can shield themselves by keeping updated.

Make sure automatic updates are enabled, and downloaded regularly.
