Cleveland Browns add former Indianapolis Colts GM Ryan Grigson to personnel department

After one year in his general manager role, Grigson was named the NFL's Executive of the Year. Grigson was, among other things, responsible for the disastrous Trent Richardson trade with the Browns that lost his team a first-round pick.

The Browns announced they have hired Ryan Grigson as Senior Personnel Executive. "His experiences as an National Football League player and executive will prove valuable to the mission of our group, while his team-orientation and personal integrity will continue to strengthen our department's culture".

In Cleveland, Grigson will reunite with Browns vice president of player personnel Andrew Berry, who previously served as the Colts pro scouting coordinator (2012-16) under Grigson before joining the Browns on a job promotion.

"It was gut, intuitive, instinct from looking at where we were and where we are as a franchise", Jim Irsay told ESPN in January of Grigson's firing.

"He is a good man, and as part of this organization, he worked tirelessly to make us better". Grigson was initially praised for his work in Indianapolis, helping to turn the team around after Peyton Manning's time in Indy was finished.

He joins a Browns personnel department headed up by second-year general manager Sashi Brown. Most notably, he whiffed on 2014 first-round pick Bjoern Werner-who has since retired-and wide receiver Phillip Dorsett-who was drafted in the first round two years ago even though the Colts had more pressing needs to address. The Browns used the Colts pick on quarterback Johnny Manziel.
