Phil Mickelson to miss U.S. Open for daughter's graduation

The paper points out that this is not the first time Mickelson playing in the U.S. Open has bumped up against one of his daughter's graduation ceremonies.

Mickelson, six times a runner-up at the only major championship he has not won, said on Saturday that he would miss this year's tournament to attend his daughter Amanda's high school graduation. I didn't want the USGA (US Golf Association) to be caught off guard and I wanted the alternate to know he will most likely be in. Mickelson has appeared in every U.S. Open that he's been eligible for since he joined the PGA Tour in 1994. He carried a beeper that week and pledged to leave the tournament, even if he were leading, to be there for the birth.

"Mike and I both agree there's no sense in doing it right now, [because] you never know what might happen, maybe something comes up with the commencement, maybe something comes up with the weather, " he said.

Amanda is Mickelson and his wife Amy's oldest child and turns 18 this month. He has finished in second place six times, more than any other player in history.

Comey to testify Trump DID press him to end Flynn probe
Another senior committee aide said any subpoenas related to the unmasking issue would have been sent by committee Chairman Rep. FBI Director James Comey speaks to the Anti-Defamation League National Leadership Summit on May 8, 2017 in Washington .

"As I look back on life, this is a moment I'll always cherish and be glad I was present", Mickelson told the Times.

"I'll actually really enjoy watching them get punished out there", Mickelson said. It wasn't really something that we discussed, because it really wasn't much of a decision.

"And I always think about that at the U.S. Open, I think about Payne Stewart (who died later that year in a plane crash) and I can't believe how quickly time has gone by".

"She's very supportive, " he said of Amanda. Since missing the Masters in 1994, that is the only major championship he has not played. She is the high school president and, according to Mickelson, is giving the commencement speech. He ended up finishing second to Justin Rose, his sixth runner-up finish in the tournament.
