2 deputies injured in courthouse shooting; suspect dies

Manchester Mayor Lonnie Norman said the shooting occurred Monday afternoon and did not involve any city employees.

Lucky Knott, a spokesman for the Coffee County Sheriff's Office, said an inmate at the courthouse grabbed a deputy's gun and started shooting. Officials said the suspect had shot himself in the head and was deceased from the incident.

The struggle began following a court hearing for Bell, who faced charges of kidnapping, evading arrest and "other similar charges", said Northcott, who added that the kidnapping charge was "domestic-related".

"I thought that he had been shot because he wouldn't move and he kept holding his stomach and slumped over the floor", Brinkley said.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said the deputies are with the Coffee County Sheriff's Office.

Two deputies were injured Monday in a shooting at a Tennessee county courthouse, and authorities said the shooter has died. Another injured his hand, but it was not clear if he was shot or hurt in the scuffle.

Bell was able to take Bassett's firearm from him and shot him once in the abdomen.

Bell then fled on foot, and, as Northcutt described, "as he was exiting the building, in a very unnecessary and cowardly way, he shot another deputy on his way out". Deputy Bassett was later transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center from Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

Bureau investigators were at the scene.

District Attorney Craig Northcott said there was a "significant struggle" during that transfer.

"The TBI will be conducting a criminal investigation of the officer-involved shooting".

The two officers were last listed in stable condition, according to WKRN.

Knott said the inmate fled the courthouse, and then he suffered a gunshot wound.
