7 dead, heavy damage to US Navy ship in collision

The remains of seven USS Fitzgerald sailors have been recovered, according to a statement from the Navy.

The sleeping quarters for 116 sailors was flooded.

US sailors aboard a Navy destroyer demonstrated bravery and heroism when their vessel was struck by a large container ship in the middle of the night Saturday.

The U.S. Navy first said the collision between the USS Fitzgerald and the ACX Crystal occurred "at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time" on Saturday morning while operating about 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan.

The US Navy has identified seven sailors who were killed when their destroyer collided with a container ship in Japanese waters on Saturday. So I'm just very confused.

"The Navy is allowing me to travel, get a better understanding of how they operate while out at sea", the sailor said. "You have to realize majority are 18-, 19-, and 20-year-olds living with guilt", Sykes explained, adding, "But I told him, 'there's a reason you're still here and make that count'".

"Doesn't count when you had to be reminded a million times", Bryson Masse tweeted, while adding, "America literally had to nag you to do this".

Acting Secretary of the Navy Sean Stackley promised an investigation into the incident.

The USS Fitzgerald was struck by the Philippine-flagged merchant vessel ACX Crystal near the port city of Yokosuka - the home base for the USA ship.

The ACX Crystal reported the collision at 2:25am (1:25am Singapore time) prompting Japanese authorities to initially log the incident at 2:20am.

She has also been criticized for her response to a fire in a London tower block last Wednesday which killed at least 79 people. Attendance has greatly increased since then among worshippers from various communities, according to the mosque's website.

She said the ship reported to the coast guard at 2:25 a.m., but she could not provide details about what the ship was doing for almost an hour.

The container ship ACX Crystal weighs 29,060 tons and is 222 meters - 730 feet - long, much larger than the 8,315-ton Navy destroyer. "It was traumatic", Aucoin said at a news conference at the Yokosuka base on Sunday.

"It was right near the pilot's house and there is a big puncture, a big gash underneath the waterline", said Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin.

"The collision affected Fitzgerald's forward starboard side above and below the water line, causing significant damage and associated flooding to two berthing spaces, a machinery space, and the radio room", according to a statement from U.S. 7th Fleet.

The US 7th Fleet is maintaining that the collision occurred at 2:20 a.m. - and both US and Japanese officials have declined to explain why there is a discrepancy regarding timing. And as you can see now the ship is still listing, so they had to fight the ship to keep it above the surface.

Despite the significant damage to the destroyer, Aucoin said he expected it would rejoin the fleet.

Container ships like the Crystal have bulbous bows under the waterline and that portion of the cargo vessel plowed into the U.S. warship.

Japan's coastguard is conducting a probe, including interviewing the Japanese-owned container ship's Filipino crew, although the United States has primary jurisdiction in probing accidents involving military personnel.

"He used to always play this Ludacris song to us, 'Roll out, '" she said.

Rehm was inspired to join the Navy by his grandfather, a World War II sailor who took Rehm on tours of military planes and ships when he was a youngster.
