Arlene Foster's DUP leadership could scupper powersharing talks, Sinn Fein warns

On the talks to strike a deal between the DUP and British conservatives to safeguard a new Tory government Mr Coveney said the Government was concerned "that if that deal wasn't an appropriate deal it could undermine the Good Friday agreement".

But speaking in Dublin after a meeting with the new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, the DUP leader Arlene Foster said it was down to Sinn Fein whether an agreement is reached.

Mr Varadkar said he was "very reassured" by her commitment to make public the terms of any deal.

The former Northern Ireland First Minister said her meeting with Mr Varadkar was very good and that she was looking forward to a very positive relationship with the Irish premier.

She repeated that Sinn Féin wanted to reach agreement but one that was based on equality, respect and integrity.

Some 48% of people think Mrs May should remain Prime Minister while 45% want her to resign amid intense scrutiny of her leadership following the Tories' poor election result and the Grenfell Tower fire.

Labour's shadow chancellor John McDonnell has raised concerns over reports the DUP want to end airport tax on visitors to Northern Ireland - which generated around £90m in 2015/16, according to HMRC estimates.

The border between Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland, an European Union member, will become the only land border between the UK and the European Union after Britain exits the bloc in March 2019.

We will speak with Sinn Fein again on Monday to try and get that set up as quickly as possible, because devolution works and works for everybody in Northern Ireland. "If we needed any reminder of the urgency of having powersharing institutions in Stormont, it is the coincidence of the Brexit negotiations beginning in Brussels today".

Senior DUP representative and former Stormont executive minister Simon Hamilton insisted any deal with the Conservative Party would benefit the whole of the United Kingdom, not just Northern Ireland. We would have to work out what that looked like.

On the advancement of talks with the DUP, South Staffordshire MP Mr Williamson said: "Good progress is being made in discussing the substantive issues surrounding any potential agreement".

O'Neill told reporters outside the Dail they are also committed to getting a government up and running in the North.
