Dems' motions, speeches knock GOP health bill for secrecy

The aide said Democrats will begin slowing work on bills by refusing to let the Senate bypass time-consuming procedural steps, which it customarily does on most legislation. A small group of Republican senators has been working in private for weeks, shielding from public view the bill and the negotiations surrounding it.

Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions ranking Democrat Patty Murray of Washington is expected to lead Monday evening's Democratic floor speeches, which could extend well into the night.

Sanders' prediction that the AHCA is a disaster is not a far leap to make - after all, earlier versions of the bill were universally panned and even Republicans found it hard to defend the loss of coverage to their constituents. They forced the chamber's top Republican to swat aside reasonable sounding requests, like holding committee hearings.

They threatened to slow the Senate's work with procedural motions. Democratic lawmakers are also responding to growing pressure from progressive activists who have been calling for more aggressive opposition.

So far, Democrats have had a tough time getting their message out as the Russian Federation investigations are dominating news coverage and reporters are talking primarily to Republicans in a health debate that relies only on their votes.

While GOP senators aren't objecting to the process as vehemently as Democrats, a number of Republicans, including Sen.

Leaders are negotiating a plan without public hearings, as they push for a swift floor vote by the July 4th break.

"Nobody is hiding the ball here", McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters last week. We have not had one hearing, not one open discussion.

"I'm a firm believer that the amount of work you have expands to fit the amount of time you give to it. Deadlines sharpen a man's mind", he said, The Hill reports.

"Republicans are drafting this bill in secret because they're ashamed of it, plain and simple,"Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said in a statement".

President Donald Trump has been eager for quick action, although in a closed-door luncheon with 15 GOP senators last week, he described a House-passed bill as "mean".

There is much about Trumpcare that we don't know, but what we do know is troubling: Millions of Americans will lose their health insurance, those who keep their insurance will pay more and have less assistance affording it, Medicaid will face drastic cuts, and essential benefits will be gutted.

Still, Senate Republicans badly want to take up other priorities such as overhauling the country's tax code.

For example, Schumer used a parliamentary inquiry to ask on the floor how many days the Senate was in executive session to debate Obamacare. "Members are very, very familiar with this issue".
