Finsbury Park suspect's family 'devastated for families of injured'

Finsbury Park suspect's family 'devastated for families of injured'

Police say it is not yet clear whether the man's death was a result of the attack.

Community leaders are praising a local imam for restraining a mob that had surrounded the man accused of driving a van into a crowd of worshipers near Finsbury Park Mosque in London.

"Our community is in shock", he said, urging people attending prayers to remain vigilant. A man was inside in the van, I saw with my eye, and the old man was also on the ground, and I see some people were also injured.

After meeting with faith leaders at Finsbury Park Mosque, the Labour leader called the attack "an act of terror against a wholly innocent community who were coming out of prayers and walking home on the street next to where I live".

"An attack on a mosque, an attack on a synagogue, an attack on a church is actually an attack on all of us".

In remarks outside Downing Street on Monday, Prime Minister Theresa May said, "It is a reminder that terrorism, extremism and hatred take many forms; and our determination to tackle them must be the same whoever is responsible".

This was the fourth terror attack in the United Kingdom in as many months, but the British people seem just as resilient as before, clearly demonstrated by the message from staff at the Finsbury Park Underground Station: "Tough Times Don't Last". He was taken to a hospital as a precaution, where he'll receive a mental health assessment, according to the statement.

He has also spoken to London Mayor Sadiq Khan and said it was important to make sure the response was "sufficient and co-ordinated" and to provide "reassurance" to the community. An hour after police arrived, one resident wrote on Twitter that "agitated" bystanders were classifying the incident as terrorism and questioned the media response.

He is being held for terrorism offences and attempted murder.

"The attack unfolded whilst a man was receiving first aid from the public at the scene", Basu said.

The rape left the seven-year-old in a critical condition and she is now fighting for her life at New Delhi's Safdurjung Hospital. Police have begun a probe into the incident. "We reached the spot and found the woman lying unconcious".

Details about the assailant were sketchy, but the assault — the most dramatic against Muslims in London in recent years — suggested a new, risky level of polarization in British society.

She said: "It's a awful, bad shock".

Mohammed Kozbar, chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque, described the attack as "cowardly".

Asked if the suspected terrorist attack was being treated as seriously as others, he told BBC News on Monday: "I'm treating it absolutely as seriously as any other attack".

She said security at mosques and other places of worship in the lead up to Eid Al-Fitr to reassure the community. "There is far more that unites us than divides us", he added.

On Monday the police said that the victim was already being treated by emergency services when the attack happened.

"We couldn't go back to bed the whole night, it was too traumatizing", Ibtisasm said.

The sisters said they were terrified as they waited to hear from family members who had been at the mosque for prayer.

A suicide bombing at a pop concert in Manchester, northern England, in May also killed 22 people, while in March, a man drove a rented auto into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London and stabbed a policeman to death before being shot dead. "I don't want to give people - people like the attacker - the satisfaction".
