London Fire: Likely Grenfell Tower Death Toll Rises to 79

British police say 58 people are missing and presumed to have died in this week's blaze at a west London highrise apartment building.

"Khan went on to call Wednesday's massive Grenfell Tower fire "a preventable accident that didn't need to happen" - and said the tragedy was "a outcome of the mistakes and neglect from politicians from the council and from the government".

Only five victims have been formally identified - and Cundy said that because of the fire's intensity and the devastation it caused, authorities may not be able to identify everybody who died.

The cause of Wednesday's blaze is still under investigation, but anger has mounted in the community amid reports that exterior paneling used in an extensive renovation completed previous year may have been banned by United Kingdom rules.

Cundy said the search and recovery operation was ongoing in the burnt-out 24-storey tower, which was built in 1974 and had received a major refurbishment that was completed past year.

"This is an incredibly distressing time for families and they have my commitment that we will do this as quickly as we possibly can", he said.

Prime Minister Theresa May is chairing another meeting of the Grenfell Tower Recovery Task Force today, amid criticism from the opposition Labour party of the government's response to the tragedy.

This will come as welcome news for lakhs of students who appeared for the exams earlier in the month of March. Last year, the result was out on May 29 and it saw a sharp 26-per cent decline in pass percentage.

The GRT includes London-wide local and regional government, central government, British Red Cross, Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr Corbyn said: "The ward where this fire took place is, I think, the poorest ward in the whole country and properties must be found - requisitioned if necessary - to make sure those residents do get re-housed locally".

Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy confirmed that the force now believes at least 79 people are dead or missing, presumed dead.

Cundy said a criminal investigation began the day of the fire and will look at a "wide range" of issues, including the renovation project, the public housing block's management and maintenance, and fire-safety measures.

On Sunday Chancellor Philip Hammond said there would be an investigation to see if building rules had been violated in reference to the cladding which had swathed the building, allegedly to improve the view from nearby luxury flats, and may have accelerated the blaze.

"The Prime Minister needs to act immediately to ensure that all evidence is protected so that everyone culpable for what happened at Grenfell Tower is held to account and feels the full force of the law", he added.

One of the family's daughters said the community had been "very nice" and the family were getting help.
