Minnesota Police Officer Takes Stand In Motorist Manslaughter Trial

That witness, also a former officer and police use-of-force expert, testified that Yanez's decision to shoot Castile was "objectively unreasonable". Only 12 will deliberate, with three serving as alternates.

Defense attorneys have argued Castile was stoned at the time of the shooting, which happened in the seconds after he informed Yanez that he was carrying a gun.

“Officer Yanez did what he had to do, which was to meet deadly force with deadly force, ” he said.

Dusterhoft said Yanez essentially seemed to dance around what he saw Castile reaching for that night, often choosing phrases in statements to authorities such as "it appeared", "it looked like" and "I thought it was" to describe what he saw.

Reynolds testified that Castile was reaching for his ID in his back pocket when he was shot.

Where was Castile's gun after the shooting?

"That wasn't my intention", Yanez said while wiping tears from his eyes, CNN affiliate WCCO reported.

A Minnesota police officer charged with manslaughter in a black motorist's death is explaining how he came to pull the man's auto over.

Jeronimo Yanez took the stand in his own defense.

Paulsen further challenged Dutton's assertion that Castile did not comply when he in fact produced the insurance card Yanez had requested and was likely trying to get the driver's license in his wallet when Yanez suddenly shot him.

Also, two witnesses gave conflicting testimonies regarding Castile's gun.

He went on to say that Yanez used "due caution" to avoid injury to the two passengers in the auto - Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her 4-year-old daughter - when he stepped to the left of the vehicle and pointed his gun downward before firing.

He said as Castile drove by his squad auto, he locked eyes with him and remembered him having a "deer in the headlights" look.

KARE 11's Lou Raguse said during Yanez's testimony, Castile's family looked on, completely composed.

Squad vehicle video of the encounter shows Yanez replying, "OK, don't reach for it then". Hardin said his opinion was based on Castiles blood levels of THC, the high-inducing agent in marijuana.

On cross examination, the prosecution attempted to show the jury that Kapelsohn is nationally known for testifying in favor of officers, and only has one case in the last 28 months in which he is working for the prosecution in a criminal case against an officer. Yanez has been charged with manslaughter. Prosecutors maintain that Castile was following Yanez's first order to retrieve his driver's license.

"I'm not pulling it out", Castile replied as Yanez opened fire.

Dusterhoft also asked why Yanez failed to tell the officers who responded to the scene about the presence of a gun in the auto as police typically do to ensure everyone's safety. Officer Jeronimo Yanez was asked to clarify audio recorded at the scene. Castile had a permit for the weapon. He testified that he examined autopsy reports to conclude that Castile had smoked marijuana within about two hours of his death.

The officer said that he began experiencing "tunnel vision" when Castile was telling him that he was not "reaching for it".

Yanez responded, "OK, don't reach for it then", followed by, "Don't pull it out", according to the squad vehicle recording.

Then, when Castile told him he had a firearm, Yanez reacted within the bounds of his training when he told him not to reach for "it". The officer backing up Yanez testified that Yanez told him later that he had seen a gun on Castile.

Her video went viral, sparking protests both locally and nationally about police use of force, particularly against black men.

Emanuel Kapelsohn did the demonstration to illustrate how long it would have taken Castile to pull his handgun out of his right pocket and point it at the officer.

Diamond Reynolds, the girlfriend of Philando Castile, live streamed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook.

Mangseth told Engh, the defense attorney, that a key police tenet is, "Be safe, and make sure you go home at the end of your shift, along with your partner". Yanez had pulled the 32-year-old cafeteria worker over because of a faulty brake light. He was one of the last witnesses called by the defense Friday and news media from across the country packed the courtroom to listen to his account of the shooting.

Prosecutor Jeffrey Paulsen noted during cross-examination that Minnesota law does not require permit holders to disclose the presence of a permit or gun.

Philando Castile funeral was held on July 14, 2016 in St. Paul Minnesota. Prosecutors have portrayed Castile as being cooperative when he volunteered to Yanez early during the stop, "Sir, I have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me".

Castile died, insisting that he hadn't been reaching for his handgun. Kapelsohn says that was a moderate response.

"I'm not reaching for it", Castile responded. The one who testified for the state said Yanez was negligent throughout the traffic stop. The ratio of black jurors matches the black population of Ramsey County, which includes St. Paul and several suburbs.

The prosecution rested its case Thursday.

Prosecutors told the jury that Castile had a permit for the gun.

The Minnesota police officer who shot and killed Philando Castile says he was afraid for his own life and saw the motorist's hand on a gun before opening fire.
