Russian diplomat condemns United States for downing Syrian fighter jet

The Russian military alleged that in Sunday's incident, "the command of the coalition forces did not use the established communication channel for preventing incidents in Syrian airspace".

On Sunday, a U.S. jet shot down a Syrian Su-22 fighter-bomber near the city of Tabqa.

However, the SU-22 dropped bombs on SDF positions a few hours later, the Pentagon said, and "in accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defence of Coalition-partnered forces [the plane] was immediately shot down".

Frants Klintsevich, deputy head of the defense committee in Russia's upper house of parliament, said the defense ministry statement does not mean there will be war with the U.S.in Syria, but rather that Moscow will not accept attacks on its Syrian allies.

Also added in the statement, coalition aircraft had "conducted a show of force" to turn back an attack by Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad's forces on the SDF in the town of Ja'Din, South of Tabqah.

From now on, all aircraft and drones of the coalition detected west of the Euphrates River will be tracked by Russian air- and ground-based air defense systems as targets, the ministry warned.

The truce that went into effect Saturday came after some of the worst fighting in months between rebels and pro-government forces.

Both Russia and Kazakhstan said on Monday the next round of Syria peace talks in Kazakhstan's capital Astana has been scheduled for July 4-5.

Syria's latest developments add significance to talks set for Friday in St Petersburg between senior USA and Russian diplomats meant to focus on key differences in the relationship, such as Syria and Ukraine.

The ministry also called on the US military to provide a full account of why it chose to shoot down the Syrian SU-22.

According to The Hill and The Guardian, the Pentagon is working to re-establish the "deconfliction" line between Russian Federation and the us following an American airstrike in Syria that drew condemnation from the Kremlin.

It's believed to be the first time in nine years that "a USA combat aircraft has shot down a manned enemy aircraft in aerial combat", The Aviationist reports.

"For operational security considerations, the Canadian Armed Forces will not disclose the frequency of the flights or the exact locations nor the details of our force protection measures and risk assessment process", spokeman Daniel Le Bouthillier said in an email.

Both the USA downing of the jet and Moscow's response are evidence of escalating tensions between the two powers in Syria, as in recent months Washington has shown an increased willingness to target Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces. Damascus said its plane had been on anti-Isis mission. It made the same threat after President Trump ordered a missile attack on a Syrian air base in April.

Moscow's move came a day after an American Navy fighter jet shot down a Syrian regime SU-22 fighter jet shortly after it allegedly attacked US partner forces on the ground.
