Shiv Sena attacks BJP over Kashmir and West Bengal situation

Shiv Sena attacks BJP over Kashmir and West Bengal situation

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray has reportedly told BJP's Amit Shah to declare a candidate for the presidential polls before seeking his party's 25,000 votes.

Uddhav said he would take the final decision on Kovind's candidature after consulta tions with his colleagues on Tuesday.

Amit Shah is scheduled to meet Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray at the latter's home on Sunday.

After Shiv Sena endorsed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat's name for presidential nominee, the right-wing organization on Saturday said the former had dialed a wrong number. It had backed Congress nominees - Pratibha Patil and Pranab Mukherjee - in the last two presidential elections.

The BJP on Monday named Dalit leader and Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as the NDA's presidential candidate.

Uddhav said that while the BJP was considering mid-term polls in Maharashtra, he was more anxious about rising agrarian distress and farmers' suicides. The meeting comes a day after the BJP chief, who is here on a three-day visit to strengthen the party organisation in the state, said his party would consult its allies before finalising the NDA's presidential candidate.

Car Rams Police Vehicle, Explodes on Paris' Champs-Elysees; Attacker Dead
Security analysts say vehicle attacks often represent last-ditch attempts at violence and are hard to prevent. In April, a policeman was shot dead and two others were wounded in an attack on the Champs-Élysées.

Ram Nath Kovind is likely to file his papers on June 23, BJP president Amit Shah said after a almost two-hour meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Board.

"It seems they have a lot of money to fight mid-term elections".

The BJP president then left for Shivaji Park to offer floral tributes to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Veer Savarkar and Bal Thackeray.

The Sena chief also attacked the BJP leaders for frequently speculating about mid-term polls in Maharashtra. "We do not support this", he said. BJP ally Shiv Sena, though, has objected to it. "Ramnath has risen through the political ranks, waging a long and hard struggle as a Dalit", said Shah.

The CM has called the Shiv Sena's threats "drama" in the past. "Bhagwat is the most appropriate choice for the Rashtrapati's office if India is to be turned into a Hindu Rashtra", he said.

The BJP chief ruled out resumption of bilateral cricket ties between India and Pakistan anytime soon.
