Vegas holds trade cards during expansion draft window

McPhee was excited to discover the cache of quality players to choose from.

"That's just a way to make it easier so they would have more flexibility heading down the stretch, not having to worry about me, having to force a trade or something", Fleury said last week.

“We can put a good team on the ice and accumulate draft picks and be in a surplus situation here in the next couple of years so that we can start with a real good team and then build it with these draft picks to a team that can win a Cup, ” said McPhee, who figures three or four new players will be in Vegas for the reveal show Wednesday night. "We were expecting this mass redistribution of players that really didn't happen, which we were really happy about".

"We think we can accomplish two things", McPhee said, according to NHL.com.

The release of the teams' protected lists kicks off a busy two-week stretch for the National Hockey League. At the least, the Golden Knights could field inquiries and see if someone is willing to bite on an aging goalie who makes tons of sense in Vegas but may make even more sense to McPhee if he reels in considerable assets. This means that Panarin does not have to be protected since he can not be selected by Vegas.

Regarding the player that sparked some internal debate on Monday morning - the guy who could either be in the starting lineup for the Golden Knights in October or traded away for assets - McPhee said they've ultimately made a decision to select him and keep him.

Vegas Golden Knights hold all the cards in NHL expansion draft
McPhee and Vegas goaltending coach Dave Prior have connections to Neuvirth and Grubauer from drafting them with the Capitals. The fifth-year player, however, won't be ready for the start of the season after having surgery to fix a shoulder injury.

Teams were required to expose a minimum of two forwards and one defensemen who were under contract for the 2017-18 season and had played a minimum of 40 games last season or 70 games in the past two seasons. Vancouver's 2012 first-round pick, Brendan Gaunce, was exposed.

The Golden Knights are allowed to choose a total of 30 players in Wednesday's draft, which leaves the other 30 National Hockey League teams nervous for their available players. But reportedly, the team could have more picks coming their way, from the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Islanders, and Anaheim Ducks, just to not select the players the teams left unprotected.

The unprotected list includes players eligible to become restricted or unrestricted free agents.

Some players left unprotected, such as Ottawa forward Bobby Ryan, carry hefty contracts, which Vegas might shy away from so not to restrict the team's payroll structure under the salary cap. But if they'd like to launder him through Vegas, not only would they have to offer a trade haul to convince Vegas to part with him, but they'd have to outbid any other teams trying to do so, and whatever the Panthers are offering Vegas to not select him in the first place. And that he's open to being dissuaded with picks, and possibly prospects, gels with everything he has said thus far.

This much is certain: With plenty of teams talking, McPhee is definitely listening. "What we've told everyone today is that today will be the last day we're going to have those discussions. But we will not make a claim with any club before we talk to the club". "You can negotiate your way out of this if you wish", McPhee said. Vegas has indicated via statement they will give all 30 clubs "every opportunity to keep their rosters intact if they'd like".

McPhee's Monday night deadline is to get everything in order with the other 30 teams in the league before he sits down with his team and drafts the first incarnation of the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday.
