Utah wildfire grows as 2 powerful California blazes spread

Almost 1,000 firefighters battled a Utah wildfire that grew Sunday morning that has prompted the evacuation of over a 1,000 people from hundreds of homes and cabins.

Utah state Rep. Mike Noel said Tuesday he wants to use the fire near the ski town of Brian Head and a popular fishing lake to highlight the imbalance of power afforded environmental groups under previous presidents and to ease bureaucratic and legal blockades for logging companies. Those fires have blackened a total of 150,000 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.

The Brian Head Fire grew to more than 54,000 acres Tuesday night, but fire officials say anticipated strong winds weren't as bad as predicted and crews were able to increase the containment area to 10 percent.

Authorities ordered more evacuations at the fire that has torched more than 67 square miles (174 square kilometers) in preparation for winds and low humidity that could push fire growth north after calmer weather kept its growth in check over the weekend.

More than 900 personnel are battling the fire, which started June 7.

About 360 firefighters are battling the fire by air and ground.

A fire sparked by a traffic collision in California's Placerita Canyon is the latest blaze to hit the West amid a deadly heatwave.

American Airlines also confirmed that the proposed investment would not change its strategic direction or management. While Qatar Airways wants that 10% stake in American Airlines Group Inc , there is no guarantee it will get it.

Winds gusted up to 30 miles per hour Monday and spread the fire on the northern end, dropping the containment of the fire to 9 percent. More than 500 firefighters were battling the blaze.

Even as shovel- and chainsaw-wielding crews and bulldozers moved into the rugged, remote smoke-enshrouded hills near Iron County's Red Creek Reservoir, about 8 miles east of Paragonah, other crews continued to painstaking work of strengthening and extending fire breaks and lines on the eastern and southern edges of the blaze.

The fire near the small city of Prescott was fanned by 35 mph (56 kph) winds and has charred more than 28 square miles (73 square kilometers).

The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/2uixPQi) reports that Mayer, Arizona, resident Terry Jackson put a garden hose to the roof after local authorities told him he had to evacuate.

A half-square-mile (1.4 sq. kilometer) wildfire erupted and quickly surged in hot, dry, windy weather near Highland in San Bernardino County.

The estimated firefighting costs now top 7 million U.S. dollars (£5.5 million) for a fire which started on June 17 near the Brian Head Resort by someone using a torch tool to burn weeds, they said.

Crews in California, meanwhile, are dealing with two new powerful and fast-growing fires.
