Facebook launches Watch tab for TV shows and live sports

It will begin replacing the current video tab for users tomorrow in Facebook's apps for Android, iOS, the web, and television.

Watching video online is getting more social.

The world's largest social network added a video tab a year ago, and it has been dropping hints for months that it wanted to become a source of original and well-produced videos, rather than just shows made by users.

Facebook has a new home for original video content produced exclusively for it by partners, who will earn 55 percent of ad break revenue while Facebook keeps 45 percent.

The feature will roll out to a limited number of users, and video creators, in the US first.

Hackers Leak 'Game Of Thrones' Documents and HBO Emails
The network has acknowledged the hack, but has not yet given out any details about the types of files hackers were able to obtain. The hackers claim to have 1.5TB of data in total, but HBO has said it does not believe its email system has been compromised .

Facebook debuted a feature to take on TV companies and streaming services like Netflix and YouTube today with the launch of Watch.

First, though, Facebook needs to prove that its users will watch longer video - and accompanying mid-roll advertisements - inside its apps. Shows are made up of episodes - live or recorded - and follow a theme or storyline. Eventually, Facebook says it will rollout 'Shows, ' the platform for episodic content, to all content creators.

Facebook also has signed a deal with Major League Baseball that will allow Watch to broadcast one live game each week.

For example, you'll find sections like "Most Talked About", which highlights shows that spark conversation, "What's Making People Laugh", which includes shows where many people have used the "Haha" reaction, and "What Friends Are Watching", which helps you connect with friends about shows they too are following. The latest from your favorite shows as well as saved videos can be seen in your watchlist. You'll also be able to participate in a dedicated Facebook Group for individual shows.

The feature will initially be available to a limited number of users in the U.S., with a broader expansion promised "soon".
