2016 was hottest year on record, global report confirms

A report compiled by a USA government agency has confirmed that 2016 was the warmest year on record and the third year in a row of record global warmth.

An worldwide, peer-reviewed publication released each summer, the State of the Climate is the authoritative annual summary of the global climate published as a supplement to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

The report confirmed prior announcements that 2016 was the hottest year since contemporary records began, marking the third year in a row that global records were broken planet-wide.

Before that, it was 2014.

A range of key climate and weather indicators show the planet is growing increasingly warm, a trend that shows no signs of slowing down, said the annual State of the Climate Report. Excess greenhouse gases from industrial activities, like burning fossil fuels, are trapping additional heat in the atmosphere, causing the Earth's temperatures to rise. The global annual average atmospheric Carbon dioxide concentration was 402.9 parts per million (ppm), which surpassed 400 ppm for the first time in the modern atmospheric measurement record and in ice core records dating back as far as 800,000 years.

The globally averaged sea surface temperature was the highest on record.

This represents a 6.3F (3.5C) increase since records began in 1900.

Scientists are now trying to characterize the relationship between yearly record high temperatures and human-caused global warming.

Trump Thanks Putin for Expelling US Diplomats
The move by Putin came in response to new United States sanctions against Russian Federation in response to its interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Meanwhile global sea level reached new highs past year and was on average about 82 mm (3.25 inches) higher than the 1993 level.

The heat was the result of long-term global warming and a strong El Niño weather phenomenon, the report said.

Scientists also observed an increase in extreme water cycles around the world with many parts of the globe experiencing major floods while other are facing severe droughts. The average temperature of land surfaces north of 60°N latitude rose 2.0°C above the 1981 to 2010 average and broke previous records set in 2007, 2011, and 2015 by 0.8°C. Average sea surface temperatures across the Arctic Ocean during August in ice-free regions ranged from near normal in some regions to around 13° to 14°F (7° to 8°C) above average in the Chukchi Sea and eastern Baffin Bay off the west coast of Greenland, and up to 20°F (11°C) above average in the Barents Sea.

The Arctic is warming faster than lower latitudes. Scientists at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) have found that Earth's average surface temperature has risen about 1.1 degrees Celsius (2.0 degrees Fahrenheit) since the late-19th century.

In 2016, meteorologists recorded 93 named tropical storms worldwide - above the 1981 to 2010 average of 82, but fewer than the 101 storms in 2015.

The data compiled in the report showed 2016 was overall a year of records.

Record high annual temperatures swept Mexico and India.
