United States stocks open slightly higher

The Labor Department said consumer prices edged up 0.1% in July following no gain in June. The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks picked up 1.69 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,374.23.

The stock market jitters came as North Korea outlined plans to launch missiles aimed at the waters off the coast of the US Pacific territory of Guam. "But we're in a low inflationary environment, which can help valuations remain elevated for longer than they would otherwise".

NEW YORK, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Wall Street put a floor under global equities on Friday after a weak inflation reading brought investors back into USA technology and other stocks, but gold and the yen still added slightly to the week's gains as tensions continued to escalate between North Korea and the United States.

The remarks followed a new report asserting that US intelligence has assessed that Pyongyang has successfully produced a nuclear warhead that can fit inside its missiles.

The benchmark S&P 500 index tumbled more than 1 per cent yesterday, only the third time this year it has fallen that much, while the Nasdaq shed more than 2 per cent.

The CBOE Volatility Index .VIX , a barometer of expected near-term stock market volatility, closed at its highest since the US presidential election on Thursday, but was down 1.22 points at 14.82 points on Friday.

Still, it could be healthy for the market to take a breather after all these records. The index had its biggest drop since mid-May a day earlier.

Investors opted for the perceived safety of US Treasuries, which pushed the yield on the 10-year note three basis points lower to 2.21%.

The dollar slipped to 109.04 yen from 109.26 late Thursday.

The recovery fit a recent pattern of investors using dips to put more money in stocks.

Mounting tensions lifted US defense stocks.

Gold held steady at two-month high with spot gold rising 0.1 percent to $1,287.83 per ounce, putting the precious metal on pace for its biggest weekly gains since April. However, any signs that the U.S.is preparing for an attack on North Korea and/or the actual launching of missiles by North Korea would likely lead to more significant selling pressure.

"If the US and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so", the editorial's authors said.

The company posted better-than-expected quarterly earnings but its sales missed expectations. Bond and gold prices, traditional havens for nervous investors, were little changed, and the VIX, a measure of how much volatility investors expect in stocks, fell 3.3 percent following a 44.4 percent jump the day before.
