Two soldiers and three militants were killed in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district on Sunday, police said.

Irate crowds clashed with the security forces at several places in the area during and after the encounter.

The encounter which began on Saturday evening and ended around Sunday noon left three local Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militants and two soldiers dead.

Hundreds of Indian soldiers and counter-insurgency forces surrounded Awneera, a village about 50 kilometers south of the main city of Srinagar, on August 12 evening following a tip-off about armed militants in the area.

Khan said the three fighters belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen group and were from nearby villages.

A 26-year-old youth who has been injured in forces firing at Shopian succumbed at Srinagar hospital, reports said.

A defence spokesman identified the Army men as Sepoy Ilayaraja P, a resident of Tamil Nadu, and Sepoy Gawai Sumedh Waman, a resident of Maharashtra.
