Breaking the Precedents, Facebook Quietly Launched an App in China

The social media platform secretly launched a photo-sharing app in China called Colorful Balloons, which doesn't carry Facebook's name, the New York Times reported Friday. Previously, the Chinese government blocked a number of products from Facebook, Inc.by dint of its Nazi internet policy.

Paul Mozur of The New York Times recently unearthed the app Colourful Balloons in Apple's Chinese App Store and noticed how similar it looked to Facebook's existing photo sharing app, Moments. As we said, the local company doesn't show any affiliation with Facebook. Nevertheless, Silicon Valley corporations barely get access to the Chinese market due to China's strict internet censorship policy.

But like a lot of USA companies, Facebook has had a hard time breaking through China's onerous digital censorship laws.

Haryana BJP chief's son sent to judicial custody in Chandigarh stalking case
Surya Prakash Garg, lawyer of the accused, said that his client has alleged that they are making him scapegoat in this case. After the incident, Kundu filed a complaint and the duo was booked on charges of stalking and attempt to kidnap.

"We have long said that we are interested in China, and are spending time understanding and learning more about the country in different ways", a Facebook spokesperson said by email.

Before the release of Colorful Balloons, Facebook had taken an unusually high-profile approach to courting China.

It was unclear if China's various internet regulators were aware of the app's existence, the Times said. Facebook released the app through a local company called Youge Internet Technology, without any hint of branding from the social media giant, and appears to have taken efforts to ensure that it doesn't spread widely. In the rest of the world, the company's Moments app connects users through Facebook. Even Colorful Balloons relies heavily on Chinese social platform WeChat to function. The app collates pictures from a mobile device's photo albums and allows users to share them with a QR code. Coming just ahead of a key meeting of the Chinese Communist Party this autumn, the secretive release of Colorful Balloons could also undermine trust between the company and the Chinese government.
