Danish submarine inventor accused of missing journalist's manslaughter

Danish police said on Saturday they were preparing to search a sunken submarine owned by Danish inventor Peter Madsen who has been charged with the inadvertent manslaughter of a journalist.

Peter Madsen was arrested Friday on preliminary manslaughter charges after his 40-ton, almost 18-meter-long (60-foot-long) submarine sank off Denmark's eastern coast.

According to a statement Wall's family shared with CPJ today, the 30-year-old Swedish-born journalist, who was based in NY and Beijing, was working on a story about inventor Peter Madsen when she went missing.

Madsen has denied responsibility for the fate of Ms Wall, saying she had disembarked before his vessel went down.

Hald Engmark says Madsen is "willing to cooperate" and hasn't decided whether to appeal the detention ruling.

Copenhagen police said the man denied killing the missing woman and reported dropping her off on a redeveloped island in Copenhagen's harbour about 3 hours into their night trip.

Ms Wall's family told the Associated Press that "it is with great dismay that we received the news that Kim went missing during an assignment in Denmark".

Officers did not identify the owner, Peter Madsen, but he appeared on Danish television on Friday to discuss the submarine's sinking.

It also reported that police were looking to determine if Madsen had sunk the submarine deliberately.

Kristian Isbak, who had answered the call to help locate the ship, saw Mr Madsen standing in the submarine's tower dressed in trademark military fatigues while it was still afloat.

She also received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in NY in 2013.

"(He) came up again and stayed in the tower until water came into it", before swimming to a nearby boat as the submarine sank.

Madsen told authorities he had dropped her off back at their departure point at about 10:30 p.m.

Peter Madsen was arrested Friday on preliminary manslaughter charges after his 40-ton, almost 18-meter-long (60-foot-long) UC3 Nautilus sank.

The Navy said the sub, the UC3 Nautilus, was seen sailing, but then sank shortly afterwards. He and Wall had not returned to Copenhagen's Refshale Island after departing in the craft Thursday evening, Reuters reported.
