Police investigating deadly Charlottesville auto crash as homicide

The driver in the fatal auto wreck in Charlottesville has been identified as James Alex Fields Jr., Colonel Martin Kumer confirmed to CBS News.

One person died and 19 were injured Saturday when a vehicle rammed a crowd of counterprotesters gathered to oppose a "Unite the Right" rally of white nationalist and other right-wing groups.

James Alex Fields, Junior of OH is charged with second degree murder, malicious wounding and hit and run.

Unrest intensified on Saturday, as a vehicle plowed into a group of counter-protesters at a white nationalist rally, killing one and injuring more than 30 others.

A 32-year-old woman who was crossing the street was killed and 19 people were injured, the Associated Press confirmed with hospital officials.

Investigators say Fields drove his auto into the crowd as thousands of White Nationalists took to the streets.

Earlier today the Charlottesville Chief of Police announced that they had Mr. Fields in custody and while charges were pending, they were investigating this as a homicide. Her name was not released.

Police said only that the crash is under investigation and have not commented on specific aspects of the crash.
