Roger Federer has reached the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal

Swiss star Roger Federer outclassed Roberto Bautista Agut as he inched closer to his sixth title of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the quarterfinals of the Montreal Masters tennis tournament here Friday.

Next up for Federer on Saturday will be surprise semi-finalist Robin Haase of the Netherlands, who rallied to defeat diminutive Argentine Diego Schwartzman 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a battle of unseeded players.

The second seed this week, Federer was typically dominant on serve for much of the match and never really looked likely to fall victim to an upset against an opponent playing a Masters 1000 semi-final for the first time. Federer posted his seventh consecutive win over the Spaniard and boosted his season record to 34-2. He has a ATP Tour high five titles in 2017.

It will be just the second career meeting between the two. The pair met in a Davis Cup World Group play-off in 2012 with Federer winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

Other quarter-finals later Friday have Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., against Adrian Mannarino of France and fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany against South African Kevin Anderson.

Shapovalov has taken major strides this week to reach his goal of cracking the world's top 100 with wins over Rogerio Dutra Silva and 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro.

Federer said he knows Haase well from serving with him on the ATP player council and from practicing together. "When I broke him, I got that little bit of confidence, and I started believing in my shots again".

Federer grabbed a second service break late in the third set to effectively seal the victory and improve to 17-0 lifetime against the 35-year-old Spaniard. "I started off pretty slow, just drained from (Thursday)".

"It's tough to come out and serve after a 12-minute rain delay".
