Central Intelligence Agency head expects more Nth Korea missile tests

But the intelligence chief also said he saw no imminent threat of North Korea attacking the USA with such a nuclear weapon, although he expected the rogue nation's missile program would continue despite global sanctions.

The top US intelligence official said on Sunday he would not be surprised if North Korea tested another missile, given that it had two tests in July, amid rising tensions between the two nations.

But he warned that Washington's "strategic patience" was over. "But each time they test another missile, or if they should conduct a nuclear weapons test, they develop expertise, they expand the envelope, and so it is probably fair to say they are moving toward that at an ever-alarming rate".

Both sides have used hostile rhetoric, with President Donald Trump threatening "fire and fury" on the North.

MILITARY confrontation with North Korea's is not imminent, senior U.S. national security officials said yesterday, but the possibility was greater than it was a decade ago.

But he stressed the USA is pursuing "a very determined diplomatic effort" led by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that is coupled with new financial sanctions to dissuade North Korean leader Kim Jong Un from further provocations. That prompted a new round of United Nations economic sanctions, which angered Mr Kim's regime.

Last week, North Korea threatened to strike the United States and its Pacific territory of Guam. 'The US military is locked and loaded every day, ' he said, repeating Mr Trump's words.

Pressed on his "nothing imminent" statement, Mr Pompeo said: "What I'm talking about is, I've heard folks talking about that we have been on the cusp of a nuclear war".

Asked how anxious people should be, Pompeo told Fox News on Sunday: "There's nothing imminent today".

Several countries have expressed concern with the escalation of the crisis.

Trump has urged China to apply more pressure on North Korea. "No intelligence that would indicate we are in that place today".

In an interview with German newspaper group RND, Gabriel said the maneuvers "could lead to North Korea using the opportunity for renewed provocation, for example, by firing an intermediate-range missile at Guam".
