Larson edges Truex to win Pure Michigan 400

Kurt Busch and Matt Kenseth lead active drivers at MI with three wins apiece.

Yes, Kyle Larson won Sunday's Pure Michigan 400, and perhaps no one was more surprised than he was to win his third consecutive race at the 2-mile track. Larson was in Knoxville, Iowa, Saturday night where he finished second in the Knoxville Nationals dirt sprint vehicle event. It was his third win of 2017.

The first two stages of Sunday's race were won by Brad Keselowski and Truex.

Furniture Row Racing teammates Truex and Erik Jones finished second and third, respectively. He finished second at that sprint auto event before returning to MI and earning his third Cup victory of the season.

Tropical Depression Eight Is "Potential Threat"
Tropical Depression Eight will take the alleyway in between those large-scale weather systems. 300 miles. Storm formation chance through 48 hours are near zero percent, and 20 percent over five days.

Truex was in front of the pack, but Michael McDowell spun out, sparking a late caution and forcing overtime.

A red flag for oil on the track only added to the drama, and when the race restarted for the final time, Larson — who hadn't led at all to that point — drove to the right of Jones and passed to the inside of Truex. Larson's last Cup Series victory was on June 18. Ideal weather to race 400 miles. Another Michigan driver, Jones, stayed out four extra laps during the cycle to lead before Keselowski cycled back around to the top spot.

After emerging from his vehicle, Larson said he had played a few restart scenarios through in his head before the two-lap shootout, but admitted that he had couldn't believe he won the race. Keselowski was second to Truex in the second stage.
