Shopian encounter: Three terrorists killed, combing ops launched

Police officials said that the security forces were conducting a search operation when the militants opened fire at them.

A police official said after suffering casualties, more security personnel were rushed to the area to tighten the siege and prevent militants from escaping. The firing from terrorists prompted the security forces to wait until dawn while keeping a tight cordon around the area before launching a major strike.

Yasin Itoo, alias Mehmood Ghaznavi, the operational commander of the Hizbul, was among those killed in the gunfight in Awneera village in Shopian.

Three militants were also killed in the encounter.

During the encounter and after the killing of the militants, irate crowds clashed with the security forces at several places in the area. The Army personnel have been identified as sepoys Ilayaraja P and Gowai SumedhWaman. Our correspondent reports that the slain terrorists were identified as local Hizbul Mujahideen cadres.

Militants fired from AK-47 rifles towards security men during a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Kochak Mohalla Hajin area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district this morning.
