The Pickup on Hand For CMA Fest

The Pickup on Hand For CMA Fest

"To most people, she is the Country Music Association".

Born Edith Josephine Denning, the future Jo Walker-Meador was one of 10 children raised on a farm near Orlinda, Tennessee.

After more than four years as Executive Secretary to the president of Crescent Amusement, a period of doing public relations for Tennessee State Attorney General G. Edward Friar's run for governor and a brief spell as office manager for Gold Hill Food Corp., she accepted an offer to become office manager - and the first paid employee - at the fledgling Country Music Association.

Honors and accolades came to Walker-Meador up to and beyond her retirement as CMA Executive Director in 1991.

Walker-Meador grew to appreciate the music and emerged a quiet, determined leader for the genre, its artists and the city that served as its hub. During her tenure as executive director, she oversaw the creation of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, CMA Awards and Fan Fair, which became CMA Fest.

The Pickup was on hand to bring you several interviews during CMA Fest and now is your chance to relive the event.

Puig Lifts Red Hot Dodgers Over White Sox
It was a far cry from the last time Rodon faced the Dodgers , a July 19 game in Chicago in which he allowed four home runs. Delmonico extended his hit streak to 11 games and has reached base safely in all 13 games in his young White Sox career.

Thanks to the efforts of Walker-Meador and others, the CMA has grown from about 200 members to a membership of more than 7,000 individuals and organizations.

The country music legend retired in 1991 but stayed involved with the organization and attended CMA events. "This is why the CMA Jo Walker-Meador International Award is named after her".

Jo Walker-Meador, one of the most important behind-the-scenes advocates of country music, has died.

Born Edith Josephine Denning in Orlinda, Tenn., on February 16, 1924, Walker-Meador's experience with country was similar to much of its fan base in previous decades, paying little attention to it during her formative years, but becoming a believer when she entered adulthood. "I had the good fortune of meeting Jo and working with her and her staff from my early years at NARM in the late-1980s".

Funeral arrangements for Meador were not immediately known. "I have been lucky to remain close to her since she retired and I felt she loved me like the son she never had".
