Skype launches new desktop preview

As a result, ratings plummeted in both Apple Inc.'s App Store and Google Inc.'s Play Store. The desktop design is therefore only available in preview right now.

Skype with a new design comes on the PC.

The new redesign isn't available yet on the regular Skype desktop app but can be accessed via Skype Preview. This feature can be very useful instead of having to scroll through the entirety of a chat to find something. "Group chats are livelier with new features that improve your connection with friends and family". You can install it alongside the standard desktop app, but the Skype team says that it will only run on Windows 10 version 1511 (OS Build 10586) and older.

To get started testing out the latest preview of Skype, head on over to Skype Insider and be sure to share your feedback with Microsoft in the Community.

Skype is also previewing features aimed at increasing productivity. Lately, dark themes have become popular choices with services like YouTube and Twitter rolling out the option. "Skype Preview puts chat front and center-making this the most expressive Skype ever", explained the team in the blog post.

You can use the chat filter to sort your chats by Time, Unread and Active (based on which of your contacts are now active on Skype). However, we like the fact that Skype Preview is a standalone app for now, which means that you can still keep using the standard desktop app (or the UWP app) while the Skype team iterates on the new version.

All the popular messaging apps, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Slack, all support @mentions so it's not surprizing that Microsoft has chose to finally include the feature in its redesign.

Skype, in its endeavors to remain significant, has presented another overhaul for its desktop application that looks vigorously roused from Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook.
