More International Pressure on Aung San Suu Kyi to End Rohingya Misery

Retired Bishop Tutu issued a letter to Suu Kyi, his fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate, in which he admonished her for not speaking out, despite her own years as a dissident prisoner.

The petition's authors ask a rather pointed question: "What is wrong with being a Muslim, Suu Kyi?". "I presume Ms. Suu Kyi is forced to take a stand against the Rohingya due to the pressure from her followers, who are not even ready to accept their existence there".

Earlier this week, Aung San Suu Kyi made her first spoken remarks on the crisis in Rakhine since government crackdowns began last month, lashing out at what she called a "huge iceberg of misinformation with the aim of promoting the interest of terrorists".

Suu Kyi was awarded the prize in 1991, while under house arrest at the hands of Myanmar's military junta, wherefrom she was released in 2010.

"For years I had a photograph of you on my desk to remind me of the injustice and sacrifice you endured out of your love and commitment for Myanmar's people".

However, the organisation that oversees the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday said the 1991 prize awarded to Suu Kyi can not be revoked.

The violence is believed to have claimed more than 1,000 lives, and catalysed a refugee crisis in neighbouring Bangladesh, where almost 300,000 Rohingya have fled.

"It is incongruous for a symbol of righteousness to lead such a country".

'My dear sister: if the political price of your ascension to the highest office in Myanmar is your silence, the price is surely too steep. But what some have called "ethnic cleansing" and others "a slow genocide" has persisted - and recently accelerated.

Luck likely out until October
Colts quarterback Scott Tolzien came into week one expecting to start for a couple of weeks while Andrew Luck's shoulder heals. Luck had right shoulder surgery in January, but has been bothered by shoulder pain since 2015.

There are about 1 million Rohingya Muslims in Burma and they have for several years complained of being victims of persecution from the state.

"Neither Alfred Nobel's will nor the statutes of the Nobel Foundation provide for the possibility that a Nobel Prize - whether for physics, chemistry, medicine, literature or peace - can be revoked", Olav Njølstad was quoted as saying by AFP, suggesting that any subsequent actions were irrelevant. By 2013 Human Rights Watch was already protesting ethnic cleansing and large numbers had fled to Bangladesh.

She has described the situation in Rhine state as "one of the biggest challenges that we've had to face" but said it "a little unreasonable to expect us to resolve everything in 18 months".

According to United Nations estimates, up to 300,000 Rohingya could be displaced into Bangladesh due to "clearance operations" by the Tatmadaw, Myanmar's armed forces.

Rohingya refugee Tayeba Khatun said she and her family had waited four days for a place on a boat after fleeing her township in Rakhine.

The vast majority of those at the mosque were Muslims of Bangladeshi heritage but the campaign movement's organisers say they are trying to bring together diverse strands of the Myanmar opposition movement.

The UN has said it is receiving "constant reports" of violence carried out by security forces in the country, with claims that thousands of people have been killed or tortured.

"We are very concerned by the United Nations announcement on September 8 that an estimated 270,000 Rohingya have arrived in Bangladesh since August 25 following allegations of serious human rights abuses in Burma's Rakhine State, including violent attacks and mass burnings of villages", the statement from spokesperson Heather Nauert said. "We pray for you to intervene in the escalating crisis and guide your people back towards the path of righteousness".
