Hurricane Irma leaves nearly 6 million without power in Florida

Hurricane Irma leaves nearly 6 million without power in Florida

In the parts of Florida where the weather had started to clear, utilities had crews out beginning to assess the damage wrought by the storm, which hit the state as a hurricane.

Hurricane Irma has weakened to a category 1 hurricane over central Florida and will continue to weaken as it moves northwest.

As the storm made landfall on the Florida Keys archipelago off the tip of southern Florida, torrential rains and lashing winds knocked out power to almost 800,000 homes and businesses on the mainland, according to utilities.

The tropical storm will most likely produce winds up to 60 miles per hour across the state and last until early Tuesday morning. The storm has a particularly large wind field, extending across the entire Florida peninsula. With expected winds of about 100 miles per hour, residents were advised to prepare for the worst by Tampa's Mayor, Bob Buckhorn.

FPL plowed almost $3 billion into smart grid technologies and stronger infrastructure, which helped the state utility limit the damage from last year's Hurricane Matthew, but the wind gusts from Irma could prove more challenging, according to McGrath. Its center hit portions of the Keys on Sunday but missed Miami and Naples, then skirted Tampa as the storm slowed. He urged residents to store trashcans and outside furniture and equipment in their homes. At least four people were killed by the storm in Florida, and 3.3 million people are now without power.

More than 116,000 were reported to have taken refuge in some 530 shelters across Florida, The Washington Post and other news outlets reported.

Much of Miami-Dade and Broward was under curfew Saturday, with most everyone else on self-imposed curfew to avoid felled trees, strewn branches and downed power lines.

Miami International Airport halted passenger flights through Monday with over 3,500 flights affected due to the storm.
