De Blasio says he wants to build a 'fairer' city

Mayor de Blasio easily won the Democratic nomination for mayor Tuesday - but few even bothered to vote.

The mayor, who spent much of his first term in search of greater national relevance, has used President Trump as a foil in the campaign.

He now faces Republican state Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, of Staten Island, and independent candidate Bo Dietl, a private detective, in November's general election.

The incumbent mayors of three upstate NY cities have won their Democratic primaries and are moving on to the general election in November.

Among the City Council races to watch is the contest in central Queens between Francisco Moya, a state assemblyman, and Hiram Monserrate, a former councilman and state senator convicted in 2009 of assaulting his then-girlfriend, and in 2012 of committing felony fraud while on the Council.

For Brooklyn Democrats vying for City Council, incumbent Antonio Reynoso won the primary for District 34; incumbent Laurie Cumbo won District 35; incumbent Carlos Menchaca won District 38; incumbent Mathieu Eugene won District 40; Alicka Ampry-Samuel won District 41; incumbent Inez Barron won District 42; incumbent Jumaane Williams won District 45 and incumbent Chaim Deutsch won District 48.

The other primary candidates were police accountability activist Bob Gangi, entrepreneur Mike Tolkin and Brooklyn community board member Richard Bashner.

Basically, it sounds like industry got a lot of what it was asking for here, with streamlined processes and fewer barriers to get testing.

Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, who stepped into the role when his predecessor took ill and later died, won the Democratic primary election for that job.

In Syracuse, three Democrats ran to succeed Democrat Stephanie Miner, who is term-limited. Thompson died shortly after, and no replacement was named, leaving Gonzalez in place.

He defeated four other Democrats in Tuesday's primary.

Most party primaries in NY state are closed contests, meaning a voter must be a registered member of the party in order to cast a ballot.

De Blasio has cruised to Primary Day with a double-digit lead in the polls over Albanese in the single public poll that has been released on the race.

The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 7.
