FPL Expects Power Back on by End of Weekend in South Florida

FPL Expects Power Back on by End of Weekend in South Florida

Many residents in Central Florida are in the dark as utility crews assess the damage caused by Hurricane Irma.

The company has 20,000 technicians drawn in from more than 30 states and Canada working around the clock to restore power to Floridians.

Duke Energy Florida has mobilized approximately 7,000 line workers, tree professionals, damage assessment and support personnel responding to the outages.

The thousands of people on Florida's East Coast stuck without power should have it restored by this Sunday at the latest, the company Tweeted Tuesday morning.

As the drone of portable generators became the lullaby of South Florida, progress was not moving rapidly enough to keep the misery factor from rising for more than 1.5 million customers still without power in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties in the sweltering aftermath of the storm. As of Tuesday afternoon, that number had decreased to 3.4 million.

Georgia Power also said that power restoration efforts, depending on the extent of the damage, could take up to several days and possibly weeks.

FPL has only been providing outage information at the county level and a media relations spokesperson said it is not able to give outages by areas at this time.

Sir Peter Hall died at the age of 86
Gregory Doran said of his predecessor 'Sir Peter Hall was a Colossus, bestriding the British Theatre. He was surrounded by his family during his last moments as reported by the National Theatre.

In Bradford County, where record flooding from Hurricane Irma was seen, around 73 percent of Clay Electric and FPL customers remain affected by outages, a majority of which are around the City of Starke.

As of Monday, the state's generation fleet had remained up and running as normal, with the exception of two FPL nuclear power plants directly in Irma's path.

Many of them have come from other states to assist in the effort. However, the state's long coastline and the associated danger of storm surge and seawater incursion make it impractical to run lines beneath the surface in some areas. However, Florida Power and Light has made it their mission to restore power as quickly as possible.

Gould said there would be a daily briefing from the company.

We don't have estimated restoration times at this moment.

Florida's Division of Emergency Management reported Tuesday morning that 4.9 million customers didn't have electricity.

"We are in the process now of doing final checks on a few of them; we will be bringing those up", FPL President and CEO Eric Silagy told reporters.
