Supreme Court Lifts Restrictions On Trump Travel Ban

At issue is whether the president can block a group of about 24,000 refugees, who have assurances from sponsors, from entering the United States.

The decision affects 24,000 refugees, who the Supreme Court agreed did not qualify for the definition of a "bona fide relationship" simply by receiving a formal assurance from a resettlement agency.

The Supreme Court handed President Trump a temporary victory Tuesday, blocking a lower court decision that would have greatly expanded the number of refugees exempted from his controversial travel ban.

The order was not the court's last word on the travel policy that Trump first rolled out in January.

The order effectively reversed part of a federal appeals court ruling that had lifted the travel ban's restrictions on the nation's refugee program.

If the appeals court ruling takes effect, it could apply to almost 24,000 refugees.

The justices exempted those with a "credible claim of a bona fide relationship" to a U.S. person or entity from the refugee ban, which affects those from anywhere in the world, and the 90-day travel ban from six Muslim-majority countries. The unsigned order from the court grants a request from the Trump administration to stay the decision of the Ninth Circuit as the case proceeds.

The 9th Circuit's order requires the administration to admit refugees contracting with resettlement agencies beginning Tuesday.

The Supreme Court largely upheld that ruling in July, although it put on hold the portion dealing with refugees. The Supreme Court justices did not explain their reasoning in their one-paragraph order.

However, the 9th Circuit also ruled that Trump's refugee policy was too broad, and the court allowed entry to refugees from around the world if they had a formal offer from a resettlement agency.

The US Supreme Court has allowed Donald Trump to implement a travel ban on several predominantly Muslim countries.

The U.S. Supreme Court stands in Washington, D.C., on May 18, 2015.

The court will consider the travel ban again on October 10. Days ago, the Ninth Circuit finally weighed in, siding with the ban's challengers regarding both family members and refugees.

Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin said he respected the Supreme Court's decision and is preparing for the hearing there on October 10.
