U.S. defends Russian Federation posts closure after Kremlin vows to sue

A senior State Department official said the USA won't speculate on whether Russian Federation will retaliate.

Russian Federation will ask the U.N. Security Council to send peacekeepers to patrol the front line in eastern Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday, a development greeted by Germany as a new opportunity for détente, AP reported.

Putin says the peacekeeping troops should operate at the frontlines.

Iryna Gerashchenko, the Ukrainian representative on the Minsk group, said that the deployment of a United Nations peacekeeping mission along the contact line in eastern Ukraine is out of the question, as the peacekeepers should be deployed throughout the entire Ukrainian territory occupied by Russian Federation.

Putin, answering a question after a BRICS summit in China about the possibility of the United States supplying Ukraine with heavy weapons, said it was for Washington to decide whom it sold or gave weapons to, but he warned against the move. The peacekeepers would be deployed to provide security to OSCE monitors and would only be on the line of contact between the two sides in the conflict.

“The Ukrainian mission in NY has been instructed to hold relevant consultations with delegations at the U.N. Security Council, ” it said in a statement.

The president also said that Ukraine's GDP has been growing six quarters in a row after 14 quarters of decline, despite the fact that the main part of Ukraine's industrial potential located in Donbas is occupied and removed from the economic flow.

Putin has said Russia's Foreign Ministry will file a formal request for the peacekeepers with the U.N. Security Council.

Poroshenko said the mission should patrol the whole conflict zone including the border between Russian Federation and the separatist-held parts of Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which Kyiv says is used to ship weapons and military personnel in from Russian Federation.
