United Nations backs new sanctions on North Korea

A USA official, familiar with the council negotiations and speaking on condition of anonymity, said North Korea imports some 4.5 million barrels of refined petroleum products annually and 4 million barrels of crude oil.

The North said its latest nuclear test was a detonation of a thermonuclear weapon built for its developmental intercontinental ballistic missiles that were flight tested twice in July.

China's Big Four state-owned banks have stopped providing financial services to new North Korean clients, according to branch staff, amid USA concerns that Beijing has not been tough enough over Pyongyang´s repeated nuclear tests. A ban on oil exports to North Korea was dropped from Monday's United Nations resolution.

Having both agreed to sign off on a watered-down version of the North Korea sanctions bill at the UN Security Council, Russia and China have issued a joint statement on the matter warning the U.S. against pushing any further measures.

"Today's resolution would not have happened without the strong relationship that has developed between President Trump and Chinese President Xi", Haley said. The sanctions also cap refined petroleum imports at 2 million barrels per year, about a ten percent cut.

Rarely does a government announce a strategy to assassinate a head of state, but South Korea wants to keep the North on edge and nervous about the consequences of further developing its nuclear arsenal.

But the South's unification ministry described the statement as "the most low-key form of response from North Korea to UN Security Council resolutions".

North Korean hackers have mounted attacks on at least three South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges since May, security researcher FireEye said in a report Monday.

The Security Council vote comes just over a month after United Nations diplomats targeted about $1 billion in North Korean exports.

Additionally, this new deal includes an "ambassador clause", which stretches Westbrook and Jordan Brand's partnership after retirement.

Russian Federation had condemned the idea of tightening sanctions on North Korea without any political push to resolve the crisis.

"The latest UNSC resolution represents the worldwide community's renewed commitment not to tolerate the North's nuclear and missile development", the government said in a statement obtained by Yonhap News.

The reduction in oil sales to North Korea isn't expected to change Kim's calculus.

Last week, US President Donald Trump agreed to lift payload limits under a decades-old treaty, allowing South Korea to build more powerful ballistic missiles.

The latest measures, while watered down, are significant.

The ban started on August 28, the teller said.

The resolution also calls on states to inspect vessels on the high seas, with consent of the flag state, if they have reasonable grounds to believe the ships are carrying prohibited cargo.

During tough negotiations, the United States dropped initial demands for a full oil embargo and a freeze on the foreign assets of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

The tensions have weighed on global markets, but there was some relief on Monday among investors that North Korea refrained from conducting another missile test this past weekend to celebrate 69 years since its founding.
