Burundi refugees killed in Congo clashes

Congolese security troops killed at least 18 Burundian refugees during confrontations Friday over plans to return some of the refugees to their home country, officials and local activists said.

"The Congolese army and police were overwhelmed by the refugee protest and fired shots into the air before the situation worsened", the army spokesman said.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is shocked and saddened over the violent death of numerous Burundian nationals - among them likely refugees and asylum-seekers, in Kamanyola, a town in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Most of the refugees involved in yesterday's incident are followers of a female prophet called Zebiya, who has attested to seeing visions of the Virgin Mary in northern Burundi, according to testimony to AFP from some of them. A [Congolese soldier] was killed in the clash, and it led to the escalation of violence. There are a total of 43,769 Burundian refugees living in DRC.

Nikki Haley to North Korea: 'No problem' letting Mattis deal with you
By overwhelming majorities, Americans share the ideals embodied in the UN Charter and support US membership in the world body. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has called the latest missile launch a reckless act by the North Koreans.

"Congolese defence and security forces then allegedly responded with indiscriminate firing on the protesters".

"There are 34 dead and 124 wounded among the Burundian refugees", he said, before warning that the death toll could rise further because refugees had taken bodies of other victims to the Pakistani-run United Nations camp at Kamanyola.

"So far, we have counted 31 dead and at least 105 injured, 15 of them seriously", the refugee said. Thousands of Burundian refugees fled to neighboring countries, including DRC, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda.
