'ExpensiveWall' Malware Charged Android Users for Bogus Services

According to Pokerfuse.com, there is a restricted test now going in the UK, Ireland and France that allows real money gambling operators to submit their apps for approval. While back in April, millions of users looking for software updates, downloaded an app featuring the SMSVova spyware straight through the official Google Play Store, which has been downloaded between 1,000,000 and 5,000,000 times. Until now the users had to install the online poker app from elsewhere (from the poker site) and allow it to be installed from a "unknown source".

The ExpensiveWall malware registers victims to premium services without their knowledge and sends fraudulent premium SMS messages, charging their accounts for fake services. Not only did it force people to sign up with subscriptions via SMS, but it was also able to remotely install applications as well as leaking user information including the phone number, Global Positioning System location, installed apps, and IP address.

Besides registering to premium services without users' assent, it has the potential to use this "Packed" technique to easily capture pictures, record audio and even steal sensitive data and send it to a command and control (C&C) server, effectively turning the victim's mobile in to ultimate spying tool. It was downloaded a million times, but it showed that even Google's best safeguards aren't able to keep malware away 100% of the time.

"Unlike most malware found on Google Play, this directly inflicts harm on users", he said.

An Israeli company in the field of cyber security said that the threat of malware has infiltrated Google Play, attacking 21 million users. The most important expansion, at least for the majority of our Audience was the launching of Voice apps in Australia earlier this month.

Google pulled the offending apps as soon as it was notified by Check Point, although another sample appeared soon after and managed to infect a further 5,000 devices before it was removed four days later. However, you should also remove the app from your device at your end.
