Hamas dissolves Gaza administration, aiming to build unity government

The negotiations were "an expression of Egyptian interest in Palestinian reconciliation and ending the division, and our interest to realize the hopes of the Palestinian people by achieving national unity", Hamas said.

Hamas said in a statement on Sunday that it has dissolved its shadow government, that it will allow the reconciliation government to operate in Gaza and that it agrees to hold elections and enter talks with Fatah.

"Hamas invites the consensus government to come to Gaza to practice its mission and carry out its duties in the Gaza Strip immediately, and it accepts holding general elections", it said.

In July this year it emerged Gaza's Hamas movement was seeking a rapprochement with the Palestinian leader once regarded as its greatest enemy, as the Islamist group faces unprecedented challenges from all sides.

In power in Gaza strip since 2007, Hamas says it is ready, in a news release issued Sunday, 17 September, to discuss formation of a government of reconciliation with its rival Fatah, and to hold general elections.

Fatah Vice Chairman Mahmoud al-Aloul welcomed Hamas's announcement, but said his party would first like to confirm its veracity.

The move also comes after a series of Palestinian Authority measures created to pressure Hamas, including reduction of electricity in Gaza and cutting of salaries.

That match saw fellow left-hander Lewis manage the impressive feat of out-hitting Gayle on his way to a stunning and unbeaten 125. Captain Carlos Brathwaite (3-20) and Kesrick Williams (3-35) then undermined England's comeback.

A team led by Hamas chief Ismail?Haniyeh?has been in Cairo for a week, holding talks aimed at reconciling with Abbas.

Since then, the Palestinian leadership has been divided between two rival governments.

In April 2014, Hamas, Fatah and the PLO factions signed on Shatti (Beach) agreement at the house of the current Hamas chief Ismail Haneya in western Gaza, and agreed to form a consensus technocrat government that runs both Gaza and the West Bank headed by Rami Hamdallah.

"This position puts President Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah movement in front of the Egyptian efforts and in front of the Palestinian people before a real test in order to achieve our people's aspirations, achieve a real unity and a real partnership", said Barhoum.

This means that electricity has often been provided for less than four hours a day, and never more than six. Abbas has also cut the salaries of thousands of former PA employees, many his supporters, who he had instructed not to work for the Hamas government.

"Hamas wants to improve the situation in Gaza, but it doesn't want to give up control of it", Bjorn said.
