Interpreter accused of signing gibberish during Hurricane Irma briefing

County leaders told WFLA that they were, "in a pinch", and needed an interpreter for the deaf.

"It was obvious to me he wasn't a professional interpreter".

The Daily Moth, which provides information to the deaf community via videos, reported on the incident and identified the man on the video as a county lifeguard who reportedly knows some sign language because he has a brother who is deaf or hard of hearing.

While residents of Manatee County, Florida, waited for information about evacuation plans and shelters on September 8, a man in a yellow polo and red shorts, standing alongside emergency management officials, was instead signing about pizza, dogs, cats, bears, and monsters.

"They said yes, for the next morning at 9:30 am", she said.

Chris Wagner is the former president of the National Association for the Deaf.

Charlene McCarthy, the founder of VisCom sign language interpretation service agency, said she wished the county would have called her.

More than 300,000 Florida Power & Light ( FPL ) customers in Southwest Florida are still without power following Hurricane Irma . The Hollywood Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation with the help of state, local and federal agencies.

"It was horribly unnerving for me to watch that, knowing I could provide a qualified, certified interpreter", McCarthy said, obviously frustrated that her company wasn't called in.

He pointed out - Greene was dressed in a bright yellow shirt, a major no-no for deaf interpreters since they always dress in black allowing their hands to be visible.

He feels like this was a slap in the face, especially since he used to work in Manatee County for many years. "I was totally shocked".

The interpreter's family said he just did what his bosses asked him to do.

As Hurricane Irma was advancing on Florida, this was the message deaf residents of Manatee County received regarding a mandatory evacuation: "Help you at that time to use bear big".

Leaders for the deaf community expressed shock over how Manatee County had handled the situation.

Greene's family stuck up for him in the midst of the criticism, saying, "He can't expect to communicate something he doesn't know".
